Bhubaneswar: Veer Surendra Sai (VSS) Airport in Jharsuguda is poised for a massive transformation, with the Centre approving a Rs 2,100-crore investment under a mega international airport upgrade scheme. The ambitious project is expected to significantly enhance air connectivity in western Odisha, increase passenger handling capacity and pave the way for more domestic and international flight operations. The tentative expansion plan includes extending the airport’s runway from the present 2,391 metres to 3,600 metres, construction of a second terminal building, development of a new administrative complex, a parallel taxi track, and addition of more aircraft parking bays and aprons. The project will also entail installation of approach lighting systems and advanced navigational infrastructure.Bargarh MP Pradeep Purohit said the Centre has already sanctioned funds for the mega upgrade and that land acquisition is currently being undertaken by state govt. “For the expansion of VSS Airport, Rs 2,100 crore has been sanctioned under a mega international upgrade scheme. The state govt is taking up land acquisition. After completion of this process, the funds will be utilised for expansion works,” Purohit said. The airport now spreads over 1,027 acres and the process of acquiring an additional 226 acres for the project is currently in progress. The additional land will facilitate runway expansion, construction of new infrastructure and installation of approach lights and navigational equipment required for larger aircraft operations. The airport currently records a daily footfall of around 1,000 passengers from flights connecting Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar. Officials expect this traffic to double after expansion adds more airlines and routes. The proposed upgrade is expected to provide a major boost to trade, industry and tourism in western Odisha, particularly in Jharsuguda and neighbouring districts. Improved air connectivity is also likely to attract investments and strengthen the region’s link with major commercial centres across the country and abroad.VSS Airport became operational in Sept 2018 after being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Built at a cost of Rs 210 crore, including a contribution of Rs 75 crore from state govt, the airport has emerged as a key transportation hub for the state’s western region. In Aug 2019, the airport further enhanced its operational capabilities with the installation of Doppler Very High-Frequency Omni Range (DVOR) technology, enabling improved air navigation and air traffic management. The upcoming expansion is expected to further elevate its status, positioning Jharsuguda as one of eastern India’s emerging aviation gateways.
