Rourkela: Bargarh engineer Gunnam Jaykrishna (38), who survived the devastating flash floods in Nepal, returned to his home at Sarala village under Jampali gram panchayat in the district on Saturday evening, after unsuccessful attempts to trace his missing wife and two-year-old child.Since his wife and daughter have not yet been traced, a DNA sample was collected from his brother-in-law in Kathmandu for DNA matching. Significantly, DNA samples are being collected from the first-degree biological relatives of missing people in Nepal’s flash floods to match against unidentified human remains or bodies being recovered.A mechanical engineer who worked on Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, Jaykrishna’s work took him to higher ground when the flash floods hit Nepal on the morning of Aug 26, saving his life. His wife Gunnam Sai Bindu (25) and daughter Harixa, who were home in a nearby village, however, remain missing as their settlement was swept away.Jaykrishna was airlifted to Kathmandu with other rescued workers the next day. When he finally spoke to his family members back in Odisha later that night, he broke the news that his wife and daughter were missing. His travel documents were also swept away. His family members in Bargarh district then appealed to the sub-collector to make necessary early arrangements for Jaykrishna’s return to his village.Although his travel documents were prepared with the support of external affairs ministry, he decided to stay back and search for his wife and daughter, with the help of his company.Since his wife and daughter could not be traced, officials there contacted Bindu’s paternal family for DNA matching. Bindu’s brother, accompanied by Jaykrishna’s elder brother Dinesh Choudhury, went to Kathmandu to give his sample for DNA matching. After the formalities, Jaykrishna returned to India along with his brother-in-law and elder brother on a Kathmandu-Delhi flight on Saturday. Thereafter, they boarded another flight from Delhi to Jharsuguda, from where Jaykrishna and his elder brother travelled to their village by road.Dinesh, after arriving at their village, said they are worried about Jaykrishna’s wife and daughter.
