Rourkela: Angul police detained a retired armyman on Wednesday for allegedly shooting a 37-year-old villager dead following a heated argument in Bantala village on Tuesday evening.The deceased, identified as Sushant Pradhan (37), alias Kalia, was allegedly shot by Prakash Sahu (62), a retired armyman from the same village.According to police, the two got into an altercation near Nimbachhak in Bantala around 7 pm on Tuesday. As the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, Sahu allegedly went home, brought his double-barrelled gun and fired at Pradhan. The bullet struck Pradhan in the chest, causing him to collapse on the spot. After the incident, the accused allegedly fled, dropping the firearm.On being apprised, Bantala police reached the spot and rushed Pradhan to Bantala community health centre, where doctors declared him dead. Police seized the firearm and launched an investigation.Senior police officers visited the scene, while a manhunt was launched to trace the accused. Sahu was detained on Wednesday afternoon and is being interrogated. Police also conducted further inquiries at the crime scene and completed the post-mortem of the deceased.“The accused, a retired army personnel, has been detained and is being interrogated. He will be formally arrested,” said Ramakant Mahalik, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Angul.Police are investigating the exact circumstances that led to the shooting.
