Berhampur: With student union elections scheduled for Oct 15, Berhampur University has imposed night-time entry restrictions and stepped up security measures on campus to prevent any untoward incident.The university’s main gate will remain shut from 9.30 pm to 5 am beginning Wednesday, and no one will be allowed to enter the campus during this period, said Sukant Tripathy, chairman of the postgraduate council. Boarders have been advised to return to the campus before 9.30 pm, said hostel warden Ganesh Sethi.The move comes amid heightened security concerns following the announcement of student elections. Students and faculty members have been asked to carry identity cards inside the campus.Tripathy said police have intensified checks at the university gate to prevent the entry of outsiders, while a special internal squad has been formed to monitor activities on the university premises.Authorities have also directed superintendents of all 16 hostels, including eight girls’ hostels, to visit their hostels every evening between 7 pm and 9 pm until the election process is over. Hostel security guards have been asked to step up patrolling around hostels and other sensitive areas.Khallikote Unitary University has also barred the entry of outsiders. Vice-chancellor Asima Sahu said only students carrying university identity cards and wearing the prescribed uniform would be allowed in the campus.The security measures follow a clash between two student groups on Monday. Police arrested nine persons in connection with the incident and later released them on bail. Authorities said the situation is now under control and academic activities are continuing normally.
