Berhampur: Search operations were intensified at Gadipabali, a remote hilltop village in Ganjam district, on Tuesday with more personnel and local workers deployed to trace 10 persons missing since Oct 28 after massive landslides triggered by heavy rain in the aftermath of Cyclone Arnab.Personnel from the NDRF, ODRAF, SOG, DVF, fire services, railways and mines departments, along with veterinary teams and around 100 local labourers, were engaged in the search operation. The village is located in the difficult Ganjam-Kandhamal border terrain.Collector (Kandhamal) Ved Bhusan, who is monitoring the operation, said Gadipabali has nine families with a population of 26. Of them, 13 had moved towards Kandhamal after heavy rain began on the night of Oct 28 and taken shelter at a temporary relief centre near G Udayagiri. The remaining residents were in their homes when the massive landslide struck.Authorities in Ganjam and Kandhamal launched a search and rescue operation after learning about the disappearance of the villagers. Tackling treacherous terrain, rescue personnel had to trek around 5 km along rocky and muddy stretches to reach the village and search for the missing residents.Commerce and transport minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena also joined the search operation on Sunday. “We saw huge boulders inside their thatched houses. They had rolled down from the upper reaches,” Jena said.During the operation, rescuers found an elderly woman alive and recovered the bodies of two missing villagers. The last rites of Sunman Pradhan (29), whose body was identified by his relatives, were performed on Tuesday, and Ravi Mallick (52) was cremated on Sunday.Search teams also recovered the decomposed carcasses of three cows and four goats. Veterinary officials will vaccinate cattle in the village and nearby areas to prevent infections, sources said.
