Farmers stare at more misery with fresh rain warning

Berhampur: Already reeling from the aftermath of Cyclone Arnab, farmers in Ganjam and Gajapati districts are staring at further misery with the IMD predicting another spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall under the impact of a fresh cyclonic storm, which is likely to hit Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday and could impact southern Odisha again.“Standing paddy crops in around 10 acres of field got submerged in the floodwater. There is still water in the field. The fresh spell of rain will damage the root of the paddy, which is in its milking stage,” said Sameer Kumar Pradhan, a farmer in Takarada.Shankar Kumar Pati, a farmer in Samantiapalli, said if the district experiences fresh rain under the influence of Cyclone Murasu, the entire paddy crop will be destroyed.Due to the heavy rain and subsequent floods due to a deep depression in the last week of Sept, the district suffered 33% crop loss in over 3.402 hectares. Paddy was cultivated in around 2.16 lakh hectares in the district during this kharif season.Chief district agriculture officer Manoranjan Roul said the plan to assess the extent of damage has been hit by the prediction of fresh rain. “Now we have planned to undertake the survey of loss after the weather clears,” Roul said.Meanwhile, govt has deployed an additional 145 agriculture officers to support the district administration for effective flood management and timely assessment of damage and restoration.
