MKCG ceiling collapse prompts patient evacuation | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Patients in the cancer ward of the govt-run MKCG Medical College and Hospital had a close shave after a small portion of the ceiling caved in along with false ceiling on Wednesday night, purportedly due to incessant rain for the past three days under the influence of Cyclone Arnab.“On being apprised, we visited the ward. Around a dozen patients undergoing treatment there were immediately shifted to the male surgery ward,” said Sudeepta Dash, superintendent of the medical college and hospital. There was no patient in the area where the ceiling caved in, while other patients were on the other side of the ward. “The patients have been shifted for safety,” said Sweta Kumar Das, registrar of the medical college and hospital. The hospital superintendent said the cancer ward was functioning in an old building. Continuous rain for three days under Arnab’s influence might have triggered the collapse of the ceiling. She said they, along with works department engineers, inspected some other wards in the night. In some other wards, they found water seepage owing to rain. “We will write to the govt for immediate repair and early completion of the new building for cancer patients,” she said.Meanwhile, a wall of an annex room of the police beat house at Budhamba under Kabisurya Nagar police station limits in Ganjam district collapsed due to heavy rain on Thursday morning. “The room was used to keep the uniform and other materials of the police personnel,” said Sanjit Behera, inspector in charge, Kabisurya Nagar. He said no one was in the room when it collapsed.
