Bhubaneswar: Just two days after chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi administered the integrity pledge to public servants during the ongoing Vigilance Awareness Week and urged them to shun corrupt practices, a woman forest official was arrested by Odisha vigilance on Thursday for allegedly accepting a Rs 1 lakh bribe from a subordinate to clear a Rs 6 lakh bill. The accused, Mousumi Behera, is posted as deputy ranger at Phulnakhara under Bhubaneswar city forest division.According to vigilance officials, a forester working under Behera lodged a complaint alleging that she demanded a bribe to approve a bill related to the maintenance of three nursery sites. The complainant is responsible for the plantation sites and submitted a bill of around Rs 6.18 lakh towards expenses incurred between July and Sept, including watch and ward, watering, fertiliser application and other maintenance work.“Verification revealed that the deputy ranger had allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh to clear the bill. She also reportedly warned the complainant that future bills would not be processed unless the bribe was paid,” said vigilance SP (cell) Susanta Kumar Biswal.Acting on the complaint, vigilance officials laid a trap and allegedly caught Behera red-handed while accepting the bribe at her govt quarters in Cuttack. The entire bribe amount was recovered and seized from her possession, officials said.“Following the trap, simultaneous searches were launched at her residence and other linked locations to ascertain whether she possesses assets disproportionate to her known sources of income. Further investigation is underway,” Biswal added.A case has been registered against her under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Behera joined govt service as a forester on Sept 28, 2015.
