In 2024, Travis Kelce showed how a small act of generosity can make a lasting difference in a community. The Kansas City Chiefs star teamed up with breakfast brand Kodiak to provide 25,000 meals to children at Operation Breakthrough, a nonprofit serving families in Kansas City. The donation arrived at a meaningful time for the organisation, which was mourning the loss of co-founder Sister Berta. Beyond helping feed children, Kelce’s contribution supported a mission built on compassion, education and the belief that every child deserves a chance to thrive.

How Travis Kelce’s donation supported Operation Breakthrough

Kelce’s partnership with Kodiak brought practical help to children who rely on Operation Breakthrough for essential services. The organisation supports more than 700 children every day, offering resources designed to help them and their families build better futures. The donation also gave the centre a reason to celebrate. Staff prepared a special pancake breakfast featuring Chiefs-themed and Operation Breakthrough-inspired designs, bringing together the football star’s generosity and the nonprofit’s community spirit. For Kelce, whose public profile extends far beyond the football field, the initiative offered a way to connect his success with a cause close to the Kansas City community. Food donations can meet an immediate need, but they can also help raise awareness of organisations working to support children throughout the year.Entrepreneurship educator Shirl Nichols highlighted the importance of keeping generosity at the heart of success.“No matter how big you make it, giving back is your number one priority,” entrepreneurship educator Shirl Nichols said. That message reflects the wider role that athletes and businesses can play when they use their influence to support local organisations. A single donation cannot solve every challenge facing families, but it can provide meaningful assistance while encouraging others to contribute.

Operation Breakthrough carries forward Sister Berta’s legacy

Sister Berta and her close friend, Sister Corita, founded Operation Breakthrough in 1971. What began as an effort to care for a few children in a home grew into an organisation serving hundreds of children daily.Sister Berta’s death left a deep emotional mark on the people connected to the nonprofit. Her daughter, Vanshay Purnell, described how her mother’s values continue to guide the organisation’s work.“When I walk in the building, I just feel her,” Vanshay Purnell, Sister Berta’s daughter, said. “I always think, ‘What would Sister Berta or Sister Corita do?’ That’s how I usually go through my day-to-day.”Purnell also explained why the founders’ original vision remains important.“They (Sister Berta and Sister Corita) wanted to make it bigger for more kids and more families,” Purnell said. “I feel like they’re doing that.”The 25,000-meal donation became part of that continuing effort, linking Kelce’s community support with the founders’ long-standing commitment to children and families.Reflecting on her mother’s impact, Purnell added, “I think she would just be speechless,” Purnell said of her mom. “She would be in awe about all the kids they’re helping still. It’s been a long time coming.”For Operation Breakthrough, the donation represented more than a breakfast celebration. It helped sustain a mission that has continued for decades, keeping Sister Berta’s legacy alive through the children and families the organisation serves.
