Puri: A 40-year-old woman died after a tree fell on her house, bringing down a brick wall on her while she was cooking in Puri district’s Astaranga block on Tuesday amid heavy rain accompanied by winds triggered by the approaching cyclone.The incident occurred at Jenapur village under Saripur panchayat around 9 am. The deceased, identified as Lobhavati Muduli, was cooking when a tree near her house toppled on to the wall, causing it to collapse and trap her under the debris. Villagers rescued her and rushed her by ambulance to Astaranga. She was later shifted to Bhubaneswar for further treatment, but succumbed to her injuries in the afternoon.Her husband, Prashant Muduli, a daily-wage labourer, said his wife was preparing food for their son when the brick wall collapsed on her. “The heavy rainfall had weakened the wall, and it collapsed after a tree fell on it,” he said.The couple has three children, including two young daughters and a son. The sole breadwinner of the family, Prashant said he struggled to make ends meet through daily-wage work and appealed to the government for financial assistance to support his children following his wife’s death.
