Bhubaneswar: East Coast Railway (ECoR) has cancelled six more trains as a precautionary measure in view of Cyclone Arnab, taking the total number of cancelled services to 28. Railway officials said the decision was taken to ensure passenger safety amid heavy rain and strong winds in several parts of Odisha. The cancellations have disrupted travel plans for hundreds of passengers, particularly those who had planned holiday trips during the festive season. Many travellers were trying to make alternative arrangements after learning that their trains would not operate.“I had booked tickets for a family trip to Hyderabad weeks in advance. With the Bhubaneswar-New Secunderabad Express cancelled at the last moment, we had no option but to postpone the tour,” said passenger Jitendra Rout at Bhubaneswar railway station.Another traveller, Muna Mallick, who was scheduled to visit relatives in south Odisha, said the cancellation upset his carefully planned travel arrangements. “Road travel is not a safe option during a cyclone. We have decided to cancel the trip altogether,” he said.Among the cancelled trains are the Bhubaneswar-New Secunderabad Express, Rourkela-Jagdalpur Express, Howrah-Jagdalpur Express, Pune-Bhubaneswar-Pune Express and several passenger services connecting Visakhapatnam, Koraput and Kirandul.Apart from the cancellations, ECoR has also partially curtailed the Bhubaneswar-Jagdalpur Express and Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Express. These trains will operate only up to Rayagada on specified days until Dec 31.Railway authorities said safety remains the top priority during extreme weather conditions. Officials added that trains passing through vulnerable sections are being regulated to avoid risks to passengers and railway infrastructure. Some services have also been partially cancelled or rescheduled. Railway officials are closely monitoring the cyclone situation and will take further decisions depending on weather conditions, ECoR said in a statement. After the landfall of Cyclone Arnab, the railways have activated emergency response measures. ECoR has set up a Disaster Management Cell at Rail Sadan here and round-the-clock war rooms at the divisional headquarters.Additional patrolmen, officers and watchmen have been deployed in vulnerable sections, particularly in the Rayagada division. Reserve trains, locomotives, restoration equipment, medical teams and ambulances have been kept ready. ECoR is coordinating with weather and state authorities and is regularly informing passengers about operational changes, official sources said.
