Koraput: Maa Mati Mali Suraksha Manch (MMMSM) has called off its proposed protest rally in Rayagada district’s Sijimali bauxite mining region on Tuesday in view of the expected cyclone, citing concerns over safety of villagers travelling from remote areas to participate in the demonstration. The rally was planned to protest the arrest of two activists, Dr Randall Sequeira and Laxman Naik, and alleged police harassment of villagers opposing mining activities in the region.MMMSM member Subash Singh Majhi said the decision to postpone the rally was taken considering the possible impact of the cyclone and the difficulties villagers might face while travelling to the protest venue and returning to their homes.“Villagers from several remote areas were expected to participate in the rally. However, in view of the cyclone and the possibility of heavy rain, we decided to cancel Tuesday’s programme as their safety is our priority. A fresh date will be announced after consultations with other members of the organisation,” said Majhi. He maintained that the agitation against the arrests and alleged harassment of mining opponents would continue.Sequeira and Naik were arrested on Oct 16 and remanded in judicial custody. Police have maintained that the arrests were made in connection with criminal complaints lodged at Kashipur police station.
