NEW DELHI: AI training is set to reach India’s government workforce, with OpenAI partnering with Karmayogi Bharat to introduce AI learning courses on the Centre’s iGOT Karmayogi platform, which already has over 1.7 crore government employees registered across the country. The two organisations on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to equip civil servants with practical AI skills, enabling them to use emerging technologies in their everyday work and improve public service delivery.OpenAI will make approved learning resources from its OpenAI Academy available through iGOT Karmayogi, the government’s digital training platform under Mission Karmayogi. The initiative will cover eligible personnel across central and state governments and Union territories. While OpenAI will provide the course content, Karmayogi Bharat will facilitate access, encourage participation and coordinate with government departments. The collaboration marks an expansion of AI-focused capacity building within the government, moving beyond specialised technology professionals to include civil servants performing administrative and public-facing functions.“As technology reshapes governance, civil servants need practical skills they can apply directly in their day-to-day work,” said Chhavi Bhardwaj, CEO, Karmayogi Bharat. She said the initiative would help officials engage with AI confidently, use it responsibly and translate new capabilities into better public outcomes.Pragya Misra, head of strategy and government affairs, OpenAI India, said the country’s AI opportunity depended not merely on access to technology but also on how effectively institutions and individuals used it.

“With more than 1.7 crore government employees across the Centre, States and Union Territories registered on iGOT Karmayogi, the platform offers a powerful way to build practical AI capability at scale,” she said. The partnership comes amid the Centre’s broader push to integrate AI into governance while developing skills needed to use the technology responsibly. However, the announcement does not specify when the courses will become available, how many will be introduced or what proportion of the platform’s registered users will be eligible for training.Karmayogi Bharat, a government company under the department of personnel and training, operates the iGOT platform as part of Mission Karmayogi’s programme for continuous professional development of civil servants.
