BMC activates 39 parking lots, puts up info on website to handle festive rush
Officials said expanding organised parking facilities is expected to reduce indiscriminate parking on major roads and improve traffic movement during the festive period

Bhubaneswar: Anticipating a massive influx of devotees and visitors during the ongoing festive season, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday put out details of 39 designated parking lots across the city on its official website. The civic body has released details of both on-road and off-road parking spaces.BMC officials on Sunday said residents can check the identified parking locations and use spaces where slots are available, a move aimed at easing congestion and preventing roadside parking during Durga Puja and the subsequent festivities.According to the civic body, 36 govt-owned land parcels were recently auctioned for use as parking lots after BMC floated tenders inviting private operators. Each private agency was permitted to operate a maximum of five parking lots. Under agreements signed with the civic body, the operators will pay a monthly revenue to the BMC for managing the facilities.BMC’s additional commissioner Kailash Chandra Dash said that besides the newly auctioned sites, three parking locations that were already functional have also been retained. “The 36 newly-auctioned parking lots and three existing ones have been made operational, taking the total number of functional parking spaces to 39 for the puja season and the upcoming festivities,” he added. Some of the prominent parking locations include Pal Heights, Indian Oil, DD Motors, Keshari Hall side, Care Hospital, KIIT Square, Damana Haat, SUM Ultimate, the area in front of KAR Clinic, Alugadi Aiginia, Lingaraj Market Complex, areas surrounding Lingaraj Temple and the Kasturba Nari Mahal locality.Officials said expanding organised parking facilities is expected to reduce indiscriminate parking on major roads and improve traffic movement during the festive period when vehicle movement increases substantially.Meanwhile, BMC has also enforced a series of no-parking zones across key traffic corridors in the city. The designated stretches include Raj Bhavan to Kalarahanga via Jayadev Vihar, Airport Square to NALCO Square via Acharya Vihar, Sishu Bhawan Square to Rajmahal Square, Rasulgarh to Jayadev Vihar and Sriya Square to the PHEO office.
