Expect dry Durga Puja as monsoon retreats from state
Bhubaneswar received light rain on Thursday

Bhubaneswar: Residents can enjoy Durga Puja without the fear of getting wet during pandal hopping, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast dry weather for most parts of the state, barring some districts, which will witness rainfall at isolated places. The forecast was made as the southwest monsoon withdrew from the country, including Odisha, on Thursday. There’s, however, a warning of thunderstorm and heavy rain for selected districts over the next two days.Sanjeev Dwivedi, a scientist at the IMD centre in the city, said light to moderate rain would most likely continue only at isolated places in selected districts during puja.“At present, the light to moderate rain is continuing under the influence of a trough line, which runs from upper air cyclonic circulation over south-coastal Tamil Nadu to northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast across southwest and westcentral Bay of Bengal,” Dwivedi said.Official report said many places in the state received light to moderate rainfall in the last 24 hours. Digapahandi in Ganjam district recorded highest 42 mm rainfall in the state during the period.A heavy rain warning has been issued for Koraput district, along with thunderstorms for some more districts for Saturday.Monsoon, which hit the Odisha coast in time, recorded 29% excess rainfall, compared to normal during the period from June to Sept.
