Berhampur: A 42-year-old man was electrocuted after coming in contact with a live wire allegedly laid to trap wild animals on the fringes of a forest in Ganjam district’s Patapur police limits in the early hours of Tuesday. The deceased, Mehenkal Nayak of Pratapagiri village, was heading to his farmland with others late Monday night to guard standing crops from wild animals, particularly wild boars, when he got entangled in the electrified wire, police said.He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital at Adapada, where doctors declared him dead. After a post-mortem at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, the body was handed over to his family members.IIC, Patapur police station, Dipti Ranjan Behera, said police seized electric and GI wires, bamboo poles and glass bottles allegedly used to erect the illegal trap. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS, and efforts are on to identify and arrest those responsible for drawing power illegally from a KV line and laying the live wire. The incident is the second such electrocution death linked to alleged traps in Ganjam within a week. On Oct 6, Santosh Kumar Swain (38) of Bhabarada village under Polasara police limits died after coming in contact with a live wire allegedly laid for hunting wild animals. He was on his way to a cowshed on the village outskirts when the incident took place. Police later arrested four persons accused of laying the electrified trap to kill wild boars.Officials said such illegal live-wire traps are often used by poachers to hunt wildlife for meat. In some cases, farmers resort to the method to protect crops from marauding wild animals, particularly wild boars.Forest department officials said anti-poaching squads have intensified patrols across the district to prevent such incidents. They said several attempts to lay electrified traps have been foiled in recent months before any wild animal was killed.
