KOCHI: An old Instagram video posted on April 20 this year on the account purportedly belonging to Suhail Sajeev, the 19-year-old arrested over the fatal Mini Cooper crash in Kerala’s Nedumbassery, shows the car’s speedometer climbing to 220kmph on what appears to be a highway, with loud music playing inside the vehicle. The 11.8-second clip shows the speedometer reading 204kmph before the speed continues to rise, reaching 220kmph just as the video ends. The footage has drawn attention following the crash on Sunday in which three young people riding a scooter were killed after the Mini Cooper allegedly rammed into their two-wheeler from behind. The video, reportedly posted on the Instagram account purportedly belonging to Sajeev, dates back several months before the fatal collision. Its location and the circumstances in which it was recorded have not been independently established. It’s also not clear from the video that who was behind the wheels when the clip was recorded. Police are yet to clarify whether the footage will form part of the evidence in the ongoing investigation. The crash occurred around 1.45am on Sunday on the airport road in Nedumbassery, near Kochi.CCTV footage of the accident shows the Mini Cooper hurtling down the road before hitting the scooter carrying three people. The impact threw the riders onto the road and sent the two-wheeler skidding away. The victims were identified as Devika, 21, from Wayanad; Gopika, 22, from Palakkad; and Iyas, 21, from Coorg in Karnataka. They worked at a craft shop in Thrikkakara and were returning towards Athani after visiting a tea shop near the airport. All three were declared dead after being taken to nearby hospitals.Police suspect the car was travelling at more than 120kmph at the time of the collision, based on witness accounts.Ernakulam Rural district police chief KS Sudarshan said investigators were examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the circumstances of the crash.Suhail Sajeev was arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. His co-passenger, Ninav, also 19, has been arrested as well. Police collected Sajeev’s blood and urine samples for forensic analysis to determine whether he had consumed alcohol or other intoxicants. Preliminary findings indicated possible intoxication, Sudarshan said, while the forensic reports were awaited. The investigation has also focused on allegations that the driver and his co-passenger made remarks suggesting that Sajeev’s father would handle the situation after the crash. An eyewitness told news agency ANI that the driver made such a statement when residents confronted the occupants of the car. Police said they would examine witness statements and take further action if any additional offence was established. The Excise Department has also begun an inquiry into bars that allegedly served alcohol to Sajeev, who is below Kerala’s legal drinking age of 23.
