Vigilance officials detain executive engineer

Bhubaneswar: A week after his promotion and two months before his retirement from govt service, an executive engineer of the works department in Mayurbhanj district was detained by Odisha vigilance on Monday for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.The engineer, Arabinda Mohanty (60), is currently posted in the roads and buildings sub-division, Betanoti. He was promoted from assistant executive engineer to executive engineer on Sept 29 and is scheduled to retire in Dec.Vigilance officials conducted simultaneous searches at properties linked to Mohanty in Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Khurda districts. “During the searches, we detected a triple-storey building in Balasore, a double-storey building at Balianta in Khurda, a five-acre farmhouse in Balasore with two fish ponds and a poultry farm, besides 20 high-value plots in and around Balasore,” a vigilance official said.The measurement and valuation of the properties are being carried out by the technical wing of the vigilance directorate to ascertain their total value and determine the extent of any disproportionate assets.Vigilance officials said Mohanty joined govt service as a junior engineer at Betanoti in Mayurbhanj on Aug 4, 1997, with an initial monthly salary of Rs 5,000. He was promoted to the rank of assistant executive engineer in 2023. “Further details of the searches and the estimated value of the assets will be ascertained after completion of the valuation exercise,” the official said.
