Berhampur: A 36-year-old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly killing his wife over dowry demands at Randha village under Golanthara police station limits in Ganjam district. The accused, Manas Ranjan Dakhinakabat, of Bonkoi village under Bolagarh police station limits in Khurda district, lived in a rented house at Randha and worked for a finance company. His wife, Ambrit Priyadarshini Rauta (28) is survived by their five-year-old son.According to police, the couple married on June 3, 2020, as per Hindu rituals. Ambrit’s family allegedly gave household articles, gold and silver ornaments, and Rs 3 lakh in cash as dowry. Her father, Upendra Kumar Rauta of Banki in Cuttack district, alleged in his complaint that the family later paid another Rs 2 lakh following additional demands from the accused and his relatives. He alleged that Ambrit was subjected to physical and mental harassment by Manas and in-laws over further dowry demands. Her ornaments were allegedly taken away.Police said the accused allegedly returned home intoxicated on Sept 23 and assaulted his wife, causing serious injuries. She was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur but succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday. Following a complaint filed by her father on Thursday, police registered a dowry death case and arrested the husband. “In a swift action, police arrested the deceased’s husband after registering a dowry death case,” Berhampur SP Abhinav Sonkar said.The SP said police seized the clothes and biological samples of the accused and deceased for forensic examination. The complainant’s statement was recorded under BNSS section 180. A scientific team inspected the spot and collected evidence. Further investigation is underway to determine whether others were involved.
