Koraput: A 45-year-old schoolteacher went missing after a country boat carrying him and a friend capsized while they were fishing in the backwaters of Kolab reservoir in Odisha’s Koraput district on Thursday morning.The missing man was identified as Bhimadhar Nayak of Bandhaguda village under Padmapur panchayat, said Koraput tehsildar Sayeed Sabir Saha. Nayak’s friend, Apurva Naik, a teacher at Machliguda primary school near Damanjodi, swam to safety.According to officials, Nayak and his friend entered the reservoir around 7.30 am. The boat overturned while they were pulling in the fishing net, throwing both men into the water. Fire services personnel and an Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) team have started a search, said district emergency officer Swaranjita Mahi.The incident took place amid heavy rainfall triggered by a deep depression over the region. Semiliguda recorded 193.9 mm of rainfall between 8 am on Wednesday and 8 am on Thursday, the highest in the state during the period. The area had also received 230.2 mm of rain in the preceding 24 hours.Despite the intense rainfall, officials said there were no reports of deaths, injuries or major traffic disruptions elsewhere in the district. Trees got uprooted in the rain and wind in parts of Borigumma, Narayanpatna and Pottangi blocks, prompting fire services and ODRAF teams to clear the affected stretches. “Currently, the situation is under control and officials have been kept on high alert to prevent any untoward incident. Traffic movement has not been affected in the district,” said collector (Koraput) Manoj Satyawan Mahajan.On Thursday, rural development and panchayati raj minister Rabi Narayan Naik held a meeting to review the rain situation in Koraput.
