Berhampur: Ganjam district administration provided facilities to around 200 fishermen of Andhra Pradesh, along with their 27 fishing trawlers, by giving them temporary shelter at the Gopalpur Port and fish landing centre at Arjyapalli on Tuesday, as they were in Bay of Bengal despite rough conditions in the sea due to a deep depression. They will return to their state after the situation limps back to normalcy, said an officer.While the fishermen, along with their 15 trawlers, took shelter at Arjyapalli jetty, 12 trawlers with their fishermen sheltered near Gopalpur port.The fishermen of various areas of Kakinada and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh were in the deep sea for fishing in 27 fishing trawlers. They could not venture to return after the condition of the sea became rough under the influence of the depression over Bay of Bengal.As they could not return to their native places due to the rough sea condition, they took shelter in two places in the district, said Devidutta Mohanty, assistant fishery officer (marine), Ganjam. IMD has warned the fishermen not to venture to the sea from Sept 21 to 25 due to the rough condition of the sea.‘We have expressed our concern as to how the fishermen go to the sea despite IMD issuing a warning well in advance about the formation of the depression over Bay of Bengal,’ said an officer.The authorities of Gopalpur port have allowed them into the safe backwater zone to stay after the intervention of the district administration, and now they are safe. They cooked the food to eat as they have food items in the trawlers for around a week, sources said.On July 6, the district administration also gave temporary rehabilitation to Andhra Pradesh fishermen when they were in the deep sea for fishing despite the rough condition of the sea. Over 200 fishermen of the neighbouring state had taken shelter in the port before they returned to their state after conditions returned to normalcy.Mohanty said the fishermen in Ganjam district did not venture into the sea since Monday after we warned them about the warning of IMD. Andhra Pradesh fishermen might have ventured into the sea for fishing by defying the IMD warning, sources said (EON)
