‘Can’t believe they are returning home dead'

Bhubaneswar: As the bodies of the seven members of a city family, who died after their vehicle was swept away in flash floods in Madhya Pradesh early on Saturday, made their last journey home on Sunday, the patriarch of the family, 66-year-old Banamali Behera, a dhaba owner at Jayadev Vihar, sat devastated at his home.“What can I say after losing seven members of my family? I am shattered. I can’t believe they are returning home dead,” Banamali said.The bodies were scheduled to arrive at night in two ambulances with a police escort.Govt officials deputed to oversee the operation are coordinating with their counterparts in Madhya Pradesh.Siba Prasad Behera (43), his son Krishna Raj (14), daughter Saira (8), sister Ritarani (38), her husband Gyanendra Kumar (44), their son Sai Swasthi, and Siba’s youngest sister Radharani (29) were on a pilgrimage to Bagalamukhi Temple at Nalkheda in Madhya Pradesh’s Agar Malwa district. They were returning from the shrine when their taxi skidded off a culvert and was swept away by floodwaters, killing all eight occupants, including the driver.“After postmortem at Nalkheda, ambulances carrying the bodies started for Bhubaneswar on Saturday evening. Family members want the last rites to be performed at Swargadwar in Puri,” said Pritish Panda, the govt’s designated official for the operation.At the family’s residence in Bhubaneswar, relatives, neighbours and well-wishers gathered through the night to support them and help with arrangements for the last rites. “We are making all arrangements to ensure the bodies are taken for cremation soon after their arrival,” said Biswajit Behera, a relative.Family sources said the group left Bhubaneswar by train on Thursday and reached Ujjain on Friday morning. They hired a taxi to visit the Bagalamukhi Temple and were heading to another shrine when the accident occurred.
