Kendrapada: A 24-year-old youth in Jajpur district was arrested on Saturday on charges of raping and impregnating a 16-year-old minor girl in a village.The victim girl’s mother filed an FIR in a police station on Friday and alleged in her complaint that her 16-year-old daughter had been raped multiple times by the accused, a neighbour, since last year and, as a result, was pregnant.Acting on the FIR, police launched an investigation and arrested the accused under Section 70(2) (where a woman under 18 years of age raped) and under sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, said the investigation officer of the case, Chinmayee Sahoo.When the minor girl told the accused about her pregnancy, he threatened her not to reveal his identity as her unborn child’s father. It was only after her mother noticed body changes that she suspected that her daughter was pregnant, added the police officer.The victim girl was medically examined by the doctors at a community health centre. A diagnosis at the hospital revealed that she was four months’ pregnant. The accused was produced in the court at Jajpur on Saturday. The court rejected his bail application and remanded him in judicial custody, added the police officer.
