Kendrapada: Two persons were arrested in Jajpur district on Saturday for allegedly attempting to abduct a woman who recently married a Dalit youth against the wishes of her family. The accused were identified as Tapas Kumar Nayak (34) and Gautam Baral (29) of Derabishi in Kendrapara district. Police also seized a revolver from their possession.According to police, Priyanka Moharan (22) of Balikuda village under Balichandrapur police station in Jajpur district and Surendra Mallic (26) of Harichandanpur village were in a relationship and married in court on May 12 this year and settled in Harichandanpur village. Priyanka’s mother-in-law, Jharna Mallick, lodged an FIR alleging that Priyanka’s parents, who had opposed the marriage, sent two youths to abduct her on Friday. The accused allegedly arrived at Harichandanpur on Friday evening and attempted to abduct Priyanka after brandishing a revolver at her husband and in-laws.Hearing Priyanka’s cries for help, local residents rushed to the couple’s house and arrested the two accused. Both accused were produced in court at Jajpur on Saturday. The court rejected their bail applications and remanded them in judicial custody. The woman’s family members are also under investigation and may be arrested for their alleged involvement in planning the abduction, the police officer added.
