NISER student falls from hostel building, dies

Bhubaneswar: A 3rd-year integrated MSc student of mathematics at the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, died after falling from the 3rd floor of a hostel building on the campus on Friday evening, police sources said. He was taken to AIIMS Bhubaneswar after being shifted first to the institute’s health centre but doctors declared him dead on arrival.The student from Nagpur in Maharashtra was staying in a campus hostel at the institute near Jatni. According to the police, security personnel responded after the fall and moved him to the NISER health facility. He was later rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he was declared brought dead.Jatni police have registered an inquiry and are investigating the circumstances leading to the death. Inspector-in charge of Jatni police station Stalin Biswal said investigators are examining how the student fell from the hostel building. “We are probing the causes of death. The inquiry will find out how the student fell off the hostel building. We suspect suicide, but the exact circumstances will be clear after investigation,” Biswal said. He said police had been informed that the student had been facing mental health concerns before his death.The student’s parents reached Bhubaneswar from Nagpur on Saturday. The postmortem was conducted at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after their arrival and consent, police said. The body was handed over to the family after necessary formalities. NISER Bhubaneswar director Hirendra Nath Ghosh, who was away on an official tour, cancelled his trip and returned to the city on Saturday. He visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar to review the situation and meet officials present there. “We can comment on the matter after the preliminary inquiry is over. I came to the hospital to see the student,” Ghosh said.The institute administration is expected to submit details sought by police as part of the inquiry. Police said statements of hostel staff, security guards and students may be recorded to establish the sequence of events on Friday evening. In March 2022, a female PhD scholar at NISER Bhubaneswar died after falling from a hostel building. Police had then said she was undergoing treatment for depression.
