3 siblings arrested for duping man of Rs 25 lakh | Bhubaneswar News



Sambalpur: The Sambalpur cyber police have busted an inter-district fraud racket and arrested three siblings from Jharsuguda district in connection with a Rs 25 lakh cheating case.The accused were identified as sisters Rajkumari Badi (24) and Jharana Badi (32) and their brother Rajesh Badi (38), all residents of Babupada in Puranabasti under Jharsuguda Town police station limits. Police said the trio allegedly learnt the modus operandi through YouTube videos and used social media to target victims by promising to double their money.Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Sambalpur SP Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo said the case came to light after Lipal Kumar Pradhan, a branch manager with life insurance company in Rourkela, lodged a complaint at the Sambalpur cyber police station in June.According to the police, the accused created a fake Facebook profile in the name of “Disha Agrawal” and befriended the complainant online. After gaining his trust through chats, they allegedly claimed they possessed a machine capable of doubling money.The victim was later asked to bring Rs 25 lakh to a hotel in Angul. Investigators said the accused used two identical bags and, on the pretext of retrieving a pen drive and a bike key, swapped the cash-filled bag with another before fleeing with the money.During the investigation, police recovered Rs 15.5 lakh in cash. Gold ornaments worth around Rs 12 lakh, allegedly purchased using the fraud proceeds and pledged with a finance company, were also seized.Police said the gang had similarly cheated another person in Rourkela of Rs 10 lakh. The accused were produced before a court and police plan to seek their remand for further investigation. The SP urged other victims of similar frauds to come forward and cautioned people against schemes promising easy and quick returns.
