Koraput: Heavy rain triggered by a low-pressure system disrupted road connectivity in Malkangiri district on Saturday, with floodwaters flowing over the Poteru bridge on NH-326, bringing traffic between Malkangiri and Motu to a standstill.The district administration declared a holiday for all schools on Saturday as a precautionary measure and cancelled leave for govt employees in view of the worsening weather and the possibility of flooding.Officials at the district emergency office said floodwaters were flowing around two feet above the Poteru bridge, while water levels rose in the Poteru river and several streams following two days of incessant rain. Vehicles were stranded on both sides of the bridge, leaving commuters facing difficulties.Water was also reported to be flowing two to three feet above bridges at Kanyashram, Baraja, Pangam, Kangurukonda and MV-90, disrupting movement in several parts of the district.Malkangiri collector Prathamesh Aravind Rajeshirke said the administration had taken precautionary measures to deal with the rain and possible flood situation and that the situation was currently under control.An ODRAF team has been kept ready in Kalimela block. Leave of all govt employees has been cancelled and schools have been declared closed as a precautionary measure. Field officials have been kept on high alert to avoid any untoward incident, the collector said.Till now, there has been no report of any casualty or injury. As rainwater is overflowing over the Pangam bridge and disrupting traffic on NH-326, an alternative route is being used to ensure smooth movement of traffic, he added.The district recorded a total rainfall of 804.1 mm in the 24 hours between 8 am on Friday and 8 am on Saturday, with the average rainfall standing at 114.87 mm, according to the district emergency services.Chitrakonda recorded the highest rainfall at 192 mm, followed by Airput (142 mm), Malkangiri (136.8 mm), Korukonda (134 mm), Mathili (85 mm), Kalimela (85 mm) and Podia (29.3 mm).The administration also apprehended that connectivity to more than 40 gram panchayats could be affected if the rain continued.
