Bhubaneswar: Relentless rain battered parts of south, western and coastal Odisha for the 3rd consecutive day on Friday as a low-pressure area over the region intensified, triggering heavy downpours, waterlogging and a rise in river levels across several districts. Kalahandi emerged as the worst-hit district with Golamunda recording a staggering 160 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending Friday morning, the highest in the state. Madanpur Rampur, Bhawanipatna and Junagarh also received 140 mm rainfall each during the period.According to the IMD data, Malkangiri recorded the highest rainfall during the day at 62.6 mm by evening followed by Kendrapada with 32 mm. Bhubaneswar received 4.7 mm rainfall. The IMD said the low pressure system is likely to become more marked by Saturday before gradually weakening. It issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall in five districts of Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Koraput.Director of IMD, regional centre, Manorama Mohanty said south and interior Odisha districts are likely to continue receiving heavy rainfall on Saturday. However, rainfall activity is expected to decline significantly from Sunday. An IMD scientist said six locations recorded very heavy rainfall while 23 others received heavy rainfall during the last 24 hours.With widespread rain continuing across the state, Odisha’s cumulative monsoon rainfall from June 1 to Sept 11 stood at 21% above normal. The three-day spell also led to a steady rise in water levels in several rivers across north and south Odisha. Rivers including the Brahmani, Baitarani and Jalaka in north Odisha, and the Vansadhara and Rushikulya in the south, witnessed rising trends. However, officials said all major rivers were flowing below warning levels and no flood situation had been reported from any part of the state.
