Kendrapada: Additional district and sessions judge, Jajpur, on Thursday sentenced a 41-year-old woman to rigorous life imprisonment for strangling her husband to death five years ago.The convict, Mamata Kuanar of Ismazlpur village under Mangalpur police station, was found guilty of murdering her 42-year-old husband, Atala Kuanr, at their house on the night of July 19, 2021. Judge Bisweswar Biswoprakash Ray convicted her under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on her. The fine, if deposited, will be paid to the deceased’s parents and child. In case of failure to pay the fine, she will have to undergo an additional year of imprisonment.According to the prosecution, Mamata strangled her husband with a charging cord while he was asleep. During the investigation, she allegedly confessed to the crime, telling police that she was involved in an extramarital relationship and that her husband had opposed the relationship.Police had also arrested her alleged paramour and another man in connection with the case. However, both were acquitted by the court due to lack of evidence against them.The autopsy report stated that the cause of death was compression of the neck by a ligature and manual strangulation, which was sufficient to cause death in the ordinary course of nature.The court convicted Mamata after examining 15 witnesses and 36 material objects and documents, Public Prosecutor Biplab Kumar Muduli said.
