Students’ shun BU women’s studies course

Berhampur: Like previous years, no student took admission in the two-year PG course in women’s studies offered by Berhampur University in the self-financed mode this year. Last year, only one student took admission and later dropped it.The university introduced a course in gender studies with 24 seats in 2022 due to govt emphasis on women empowerment. But as there is no taker for the subject in the last three years, the authorities will review its continuation. “We will put up the matter before the syndicate, the highest decision-making body of the university, to take a final call about its continuation,” said Sukant Tripathy, chairman, PG council of the university. However, the research programme on gender studies is on at the Women’s Study Center, where two students are continuing their research, sources said. There were few takers for other subjects too. While 11 students took admission in electronic sciences as against its total 40 seats, 13 students took admission in education with its 32 intake capacity. Similarly, only 6 students took admission in linguistics, which has 30 seats. Six students have taken admission in M.Sc (computer science) as against 24 seats that were offered in self-financing mode. Only nine out of 24 seats were filled in sociology, which is also a self-financing course.Lack of job opportunities is one of the reasons students being not keen to study these subjects, said academicians. “The university needs to revamp the course of studies in these subjects. The curriculum should be made keeping an eye on the job market,” said JK Baral, former vice-chancellor, Berhampur University.Sources said a total of 956 students have taken admission this year in the university as against a total of 1,198 seats in 30 subjects. All seats were filled up in botany, chemistry, physics, zoology, English, law, Odia, political science and industrial relations and public management (IR&PM) this year, sources said.
