Russian strikes killed two people and injured at least four others in Ukraine on Wednesday, after a drone hit a border crossing with Moldova in the southern Odesa region and an apartment building in Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged world leaders to take stronger action against Moscow, warning that the attacks were continuing with little international response.The Starokozache border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova was struck overnight, causing a major fire and forcing authorities to temporarily suspend passenger and vehicle traffic. Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said two civilians near the crossing were killed and three others were injured.Sixteen people were evacuated from the area, according to Zelenskyy. He said rescue teams were also working to deal with the aftermath of Russian attacks in the Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Zhytomyr and Kyiv regions.“Unfortunately, there has been too little response from the international community to these strikes, which are taking people’s lives practically every day. But a response is needed – Moscow must not go into the winter believing that it can get away with missile and drone terror without consequences. The aggression must be stopped here and now, before it spreads any further. And it is important that sanctions and support for Ukraine work effectively toward this goal. The partners who can help know exactly what is needed every day. And I thank everyone who is helping to the best of their ability,” Zelenskyy said.In Kyiv, a Russian drone struck a 16-storey apartment building early on Wednesday, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Emergency responders were sent to the site after the strike sparked a fire.Zelenskyy said four people were injured in the attack.“This morning in Kyiv, a Russian drone struck an apartment building. Four people were injured. As always, our rescuers responded swiftly, and the fire has now been extinguished. Last night in the Odesa region, the international Starokozache border crossing with Moldova was hit. Operations there have been suspended. Tragically, two people were killed and three others were injured. Sixteen people were evacuated by rescuers. My condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. Efforts are also underway to deal with the aftermath of the Russian attack in the Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Zhytomyr, and Kyiv regions,” he said.The strikes came as Russia resumed near-constant air attacks on Kyiv following a brief pause during a visit by US peace negotiators. Ukrainian officials said five people had been killed in the capital in attacks on Tuesday.The latest strikes also came amid renewed diplomatic efforts to end the war. On September 7, Zelenskyy said the territorial issue remained “relevant” to efforts to end the conflict. He said some of the most difficult questions could ultimately be resolved only by national leaders.Zelenskyy made the comments after talks in Kyiv with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. He said three rounds of discussions with the US delegation had taken place and described them as substantive.Zelenskyy said he hoped the talks would help revive negotiations and lead to a lasting peace agreement.Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow welcomed Trump’s efforts to bring an end to the conflict.“We welcome the efforts of American President Trump,” Peskov said.He also maintained that Russia had not wanted the war and said Moscow was seeking to end a conflict that it claimed had been started earlier.“We actually never wanted this war. What we’re trying to do, we’re trying to stop the war that was launched before, and it was not launched by us,” Peskov said.With Russian strikes continuing despite renewed diplomatic efforts, a lasting peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv still appears to be a distant prospect.
