Bhubaneswar: A day after a building collapse in Delhi claimed seven lives, panic gripped a locality near Delta Square in Bhubaneswar on Monday after a part of the basement of a high-rise building, which had earlier come under the scrutiny of Biju Patnaik International Airport and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), collapsed. There was no death or injury, said the BMC officials.The structure had come under the scrutiny of the airport authorities and BMC because it violated the height limit in the funnel path of the airport. “Probe is on to ascertain whether there was any structural safety issue involved,” said a BMC official.A month ago, the BMC had sought an explanation from the real estate firm, which is constructing the building. The airport had also served notice to the director of the firm for taking the top elevation of the high-rise constructed by it beyond the permissible limit posing as obstacle on flight path. The show-cause notice said, “It has come to our notice that you are constructing a hotel project comprising 2B+11 multistoried building by violating the approved height as permitted by the Airports Authority of India. Further, the validity period of the clearance/NOC given by the AAI is likely to expire in Feb 2027. You may also verify the detailed report of the certified surveyor registered by the AAI with respect to the clearance given.”
