Cuttack: Orissa High Court Bar Association on Tuesday urged the high court not to pass adverse orders against litigants whose lawyers may be unable to attend proceedings on Oct 27 and 28 due to forecast heavy rainfall associated with the cyclonic storm. In a letter to the registrar (judicial), the association cited India Meteorological Department’s forecast of extremely heavy rainfall and said the weather conditions could make it difficult for lawyers to reach the court and attend proceedings.Seeking the intervention of the Chief Justice and other judges, the Bar Association requested the court to “accommodate the members of the Bar” during the two days in view of the anticipated difficulties. It also specifically sought protection for parties whose advocates remain absent because of the weather, urging the court not to pass any adverse orders in their absence in matters listed in both the weekly and supplementary cause lists. The letter, signed by association secretary Hrudananda Mohapatra, highlighted the practical difficulties lawyers could face in attending court amid the weather warning. The high court reopened after the Puja Vacation on Tuesday. The request comes as the state braces for heavy rainfall under the influence of the cyclonic system over the Bay of Bengal.
