'Forced to say I wanted to work in sex racket': Newlywed alleges dowry torture, assault by husband
Apart from the physical abuse, Anju alleged that she was subjected to severe psychological harassment.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 24-year-old newlywed from Neendakara has alleged that her husband and his family subjected her to brutal physical and psychological abuse over dowry, including kicking her in the abdomen, hitting her on the head with a pressure cooker and assaulting her private parts.The woman, Anju, a native of Mannathara, is currently undergoing treatment at Kollam District General Hospital.Chavara police have registered a case against her husband Nandu and his parents following her complaint.Anju and Nandu got married four months ago. She alleged that the harassment began within a week of the marriage, when her husband’s family allegedly complained that the dowry brought by her was insufficient.About a month after the wedding, Nandu left for Saudi Arabia and later took Anju there.According to Anju, the abuse intensified after they reached Saudi Arabia.She alleged that Nandu frequently assaulted her using objects available at home, including a pressure cooker, stone and laptop charger cables. She suffered a serious head injury after allegedly being struck with a pressure cooker.She also alleged that Nandu kicked her in the abdomen and subjected her to brutal assault on her private parts. The woman has multiple injury marks on her body, which she said were caused by repeated assaults.Apart from the physical abuse, Anju alleged that she was subjected to severe psychological harassment.She said Nandu threatened her with a knife and forced her to record voice messages making derogatory statements about herself. She said she was even forced to record a statement saying she wanted to work in a sex racket after divorcing him.Anju said she was brought back to Kerala following the alleged abuse and was subsequently able to seek medical treatment and approach the police.She alleged that details of the assault, particularly the attacks on her abdomen and private parts, were not properly recorded when police took her statement at the hospital.Meanwhile, the police have began the investigation.
