Berhampur: The works department on Tuesday launched a technical audit of the under-construction Gate Bazaar flyover in Berhampur following concerns over the quality of work raised by Berhampur MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy. A nine-member team from the department’s quality control wing collected samples from different parts of the structure for laboratory testing. After analysing the samples, the team will submit its findings to the govt.The audit follows a letter written by Panigrahy to CM Mohan Charan Majhi last month, seeking an independent technical assessment of the project. Referring to complaints from residents, commuters and civic groups, the MP alleged that substandard materials were being used and that construction was progressing slowly. He flagged public concerns over safety, drawing parallels with the 2017 Bomikhal flyover collapse in Bhubaneswar that claimed two lives. He sought accountability from the contractor and officials associated with the project, besides a clear timeline for its completion. Sources said the CM sought a report from the works department on the allegations.The flyover, being built at the busy five-road Gate Bazaar junction, is one of Berhampur’s key infrastructure projects. Executed by the Odisha Bridge and Construction Corporation, the project is expected to ease chronic traffic congestion in the area upon completion. Officials said work is progressing and the flyover is likely to be completed by March 2027.
