Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken up a new role at the University of Oxford in England, joining its Blavatnik School of Government as a Distinguished Fellow and member of the World Leaders Circle. The university announced the appointment on Friday, November 6, marking a new chapter for Trudeau after a considerable time of hiatus he took following his resignation as Canada’s prime minister in 2025 following a decade in office. The World Leaders Circle is an international network of former heads of government whose experience and insights contribute to the school’s work on improving governance around the world.Trudeau joins a group that includes former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.“In the decade that I was prime minister, the world went through profound change both geopolitically and technologically, which fundamentally reshaped our world,” Trudeau said in a statement released by Oxford. He said he looked forward to sharing his experiences, exchanging perspectives with fellow leaders and engaging with the next generation of government and policy leaders. The Blavatnik School’s dean, Ngaire Woods, welcomed Trudeau’s appointment, saying he brought extensive experience gained through a decade of public service. She said the initiative would provide a platform for former leaders to exchange ideas and encourage international collaboration.Trudeau is expected to visit Oxford later this month. The university said fellows would mentor students and alumni and explore new approaches to government and public policy. The appointment is among Trudeau’s first major engagements since leaving political office. In September, he announced the launch of a production company, Hope & Hard Work, with his former chief of staff Katie Telford at the Toronto International Film Festival. The company plans to develop film and television projects focused on Canadian stories.Trudeau, 54, announced his intention to resign as Liberal Party leader and prime minister in January 2025 amid declining public support and growing divisions within his party. He remained prime minister until Mark Carney succeeded him in March 2025.Since leaving office, Trudeau has also shared glimpses of his personal life on social media, including his travels with pop star Katy Perry and his support for his son Xavier’s music career.
