Berhampur: Neither the recent floods nor high gold and silver prices could dampen the Dhanteras spirit with jewellery stores in Bada Bazaar, the city’s main commercial hub, witnessing brisk business.P Satya Narayan Senapati, president of Berhampur Jewellers’ Association (BJA), said the market remained abuzz with shoppers throughout the day. “The overall response is good. Most buyers are from Berhampur, while the turnout from rural areas is almost nil because of the recent floods,” Senapati said.Gold and silver outlets witnessed steady footfall, with jewellers offering discounts on making charges and other incentives to attract customers.“Even though prices are high, buying at least a small coin or a pair of earrings on Dhanteras gives us satisfaction,” said Ambika Dash, a local resident.A jewellery showroom manager said customers were adjusting their purchases to the prevailing prices. “People’s attachment to gold continues, but they are choosing smaller or lighter pieces to suit their budgets,” the manager said.
