Berhampur: While all eyes were on Kotia and the panchayat elections conducted by Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, residents of Gangabad panchayat in Rayagada block of Gajapati district reportedly crossed over to the neighbouring state and cast their votes in the rural polls.“Some people from our panchayat reportedly voted in Sabakota panchayat under Manjusha mandal in Andhra Pradesh despite our efforts to dissuade them,” said Haribandhu Karjee, former sarpanch of Gangabad, who claimed the names of around 200 residents from the panchayat figure on the electoral rolls in Andhra Pradesh. However, police deployed along the border said they have no information about people crossing over to vote.“There was no scope for us to know whether people cast their votes in Andhra Pradesh,” said SDPO (Paralakhemundi) Madhabanand Nayak. He said police personnel were deployed along the border to prevent a law and order situation.Eight villages in Ganjam district and six in Gajapati are located close to the Andhra Pradesh border. Officials of Ganjam and Gajapati districts had earlier urged residents of border villages not to take part in the elections conducted by Andhra Pradesh after coming to know that some of them had voter identity cards of both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
