Will hire placement agency for nat’l capital campus: IIM Sambalpur to Delhi HC

Cuttack: Following complaints about inadequate infrastructure and unequal placement support on its satellite campus in the national capital, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur has assured Delhi high court that it will engage a reputed placement agency to help students in its MBA-business analytics programme secure suitable job opportunities. The assurance came during the hearing of a writ petition filed in July 2026 by some students of the 2025-27 batch, who alleged that several basic facilities and institutional resources promised at the time of admission were not available at the Delhi centre.Recording the institute’s undertaking that it would deploy a reputed placement agency or recruitment process outsourcing firm to provide end-to-end assistance to the students in securing suitable placement opportunities, Justice Jasmeet Singh, in an Oct 27 judgment, disposed of the petition. The petitioners had expressed apprehension that despite having adequate academic credentials, they were not being given opportunities comparable to those available to MBA core students on the main Sambalpur campus.Appearing for IIM Sambalpur, senior advocate Sandeep Kumar Mahapatra disputed the allegation, stating that some students had already secured placements through campus recruitment. However, to address the students’ concerns and improve their career prospects, Mahapatra, on instructions, assured the court that the institute would engage a reputed agency to facilitate adequate and suitable placement opportunities for the MBA-business analytics batch at the Delhi centre.“Taking his (Mahapatra) statement on record and binding the IIM Sambalpur to the same, the petition stands disposed of,” Justice Singh said, adding, “the Court has not examined the merits of the controversies raised”.Mahapatra also assured the court that the institute would not take any further action pursuant to the show-cause notices issued to the petitioners, as it was taking steps to address the concerns raised by its students. The students had sought to relocate the entire batch to the main Sambalpur campus for the remaining three terms, citing the need for residential facilities, interaction with resident faculty, academic exposure, institutional ecosystem and placement support.Alternatively, they had sought permission to undertake their final semester in Sambalpur with access to the placement committee and facilities available to MBA core students, or appointment of an additional placement agency. They had also challenged the programme’s fee structure and sought a refund or proportionate adjustment of Rs 6.3 lakh per student, alleging deficiencies in infrastructure and academic delivery.
