Kailash Chandra Behera in police custody on Wednesday

Bhubaneswar: Not once, not twice, not thrice, but a man married four times, ensuring that each one had no inkling about the others’ existence. Finally, the law caught up with the 55-year-old polygamist on Wednesday.Acting on a complaint lodged by one of his wives, Mahila police in Bhubaneswar arrested the street vendor on charges of marrying multiple women and deceiving them. The ‘serial groom’, identified as Kailash Chandra Behera, hailing from Odagaon in Nayagarh district, was remanded in judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected.Police said a 45-year-old woman lodged a complaint on Sept 30, alleging that Behera had married her around eight years ago without disclosing that he was already married. She claimed to have recently discovered that he had married three other women before her. “I later learnt that I was his fourth wife. About four months ago, I discovered that he had concealed his earlier marriages. Since then, I have been living separately,” the complainant alleged. She further accused Behera of trespassing into her house on Sept 30, sexually assaulting her and attacking her minor daughter. Based on the complaint, police registered a case on Oct 2 and launched an investigation. However, Behera allegedly went into hiding and switched off his mobile phone after being summoned for questioning. After tracking his movements, police detained him from Khandagiri area on Tuesday night. He was formally arrested on Wednesday and produced before a court.During the investigation, police were baffled to find that Behera had allegedly married four women over the past 32 years. Police said he entered into subsequent marriages without legally dissolving his first marriage.“Preliminary investigation indicates that the accused married multiple women at different points in time. We are verifying the legal status of each marriage and examining whether any other women were similarly deceived,” said a police officer.Police sources said Behera’s second wife died following an illness a few years ago, while his third wife reportedly abandoned him and later started living with another man. Police so far have no information regarding the first wife.Police said they are probing whether more women may have been victimised by the accused and have appealed to potential victims to come forward.
