Kendrapada: Heavy rain lashed Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts on Wednesday, leading to waterlogging in many low-lying areas of Kendrapara town, Pattamundai, Rajnagar, Mahakalapada and Marsaghai in Kendrapada district and Kujang, Paradip, Ersama and Tirtol areas in Jagatsinghpur district.Waterlogging was also reported from the rehabilitation colony of Bagapatia, affecting at least 4,000 people. “Eight years back, the district administration promised to build concrete roads in the rehabilitation colony to prevent waterlogging but it is yet to be done,” said Sudrashan Rout of Bagapatia in Rajnagar block.Tidal waves caused extensive damage to agricultural land due to a breach in the saline embankment in seaside villages in Mahakalapada and Rajnagar blocks of Kendrapada district. A portion of the much-hyped geo-synthetic tubewall in Pentha district caved in. “The pounding waves took away portions of the geo-synthetic tubes. We will repair the tube wall,” said Rakesh Mallick, executive engineer, irrigation department, Kendrapada division. In another incident, a 150-ft-long embankment of Baitarani river at Naranapur village under Duttapur GP of Dasarathpur block in Jajpur district caved in on Wednesday morning. No injuries or fatalities were reported.Locals alleged that the embankment collapsed due to sub-standard work by the irrigation department. “The Baitarani breached the embankment in July this year. But officials of the irrigation department did not repair the embankment properly. As a result, a portion of the river embankment collapsed during the rain,” said Prabhupada Jena of Naranapur.Collector (Jajpur) Ambar Kumar Kar said, “We have directed senior officials of the irrigation department to rush to the spot and repair the damaged embankment.”
