Rourkela: A vigilance court in Sundargarh on Tuesday sentenced a 75-year-old retired junior clerk-cum-bench clerk, formerly posted at Panposh sub-collector’s office, to one year’s rigorous imprisonment for demanding and accepting a Rs 500 bribe from a litigant over two decades ago.Kunja Bihari Jena, a native of Jagatsinghpur district residing at Chhend Colony in Rourkela, was convicted of seeking illegal gratification from complainant Ramesh Kumar Agarwal. The bribe was demanded to inform Agarwal about hearing dates in a criminal miscellaneous case filed by his father.According to vigilance officials, Jena was posted in the office of revenue officer under Panposh sub-collector. He was caught red-handed accepting the bribe on June 22, 2003. Sambalpur Vigilance police registered a case. Special Judge (Vigilance), Sundargarh, convicted Jena under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The court imposed a fine of Rs 5,000. In default, he will undergo two additional months’ rigorous imprisonment.The court directed that the substantive sentences run concurrently and allowed set-off of the period already spent in custody in accordance with section 428 of the CrPC. Jena was granted bail after the pronouncement of the judgment. The case was investigated by former vigilance inspector Swarup Kumar Parida of the Rourkela vigilance unit. Special public prosecutor, Shyam Sundar Mishra, conducted the prosecution, assisted by assistant public prosecutor, Sandeep Panda.
