A 29-year-old man was detained on Monday in the Cachar region of Assam for allegedly making “communally provocative” statements on social media, according to authorities.According to the police, Kalparnab Gupta, who claims to be an IIT-Bombay research scholar and the head convenor of the Barak Union for Civil Liberties on Facebook, was taken into custody after a Bajrang Dal activist filed a complaint at the Silchar police station.The man was accused in the complaint of posting “defamatory, hateful and communally provocative content” on Facebook that was directed against the Bajrang Dal, RSS, and Hinduism.Additionally, Gupta was charged with trying to connect members of the Bajrang Dal to extortion schemes and a recent local gang rape assault.

He was also accused of mocking religious symbols like “sakha-sindoor” and making derogatory statements about Lord Ram and other Hindu deities as per PTI report.According to the accusation, Gupta was also encouraging beef consumption in a way that was purportedly meant to offend religious feelings and foster conflict among the community.According to the police, Gupta has been charged under many Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita laws pertaining to inciting animosity, public mischief, and defamation, as well as the Assam Cattle Preservation Act regulations.The accused is being questioned and digital evidence is being gathered as a part of an ongoing investigation.
