Berhampur: The Kandhamal district administration on Friday extended the closure of Kalinga Ghat on NH-157 until further orders following fresh landslides and rockfalls triggered by heavy rain. The landslide-prone stretch, a key road link between Ganjam and Kandhamal districts, was shut on Sept 23 and 24 as a precautionary measure.Collector (Kandhamal) Ved Bhusan said traffic movement on the ghat road would resume only after National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) clears debris and carries out necessary repairs. The collector, along with Bhanjanagar sub-collector and other officials, visited the affected site to assess the damage.A massive boulder rolled down from a nearby hill and blocked the road, while a portion of the road was washed away on Thursday due to incessant rain. No casualties were reported. Last year, the stretch remained shut for nearly one-and-a-half months after a series of landslides damaged around 40 metres of the highway.The Ganjam administration has suspended traffic on the Gajalbadi ghat section of the Sorada-Daringbadi road following heavy rainfall. A truck was stranded on the route on Thursday. “The road will be reopened once the weather improves,” an official said.With both road links between Ganjam and Kandhamal closed, passenger buses and other vehicles are being diverted via the Chakapada-Bhanjanagar route through Badangi, increasing the journey by around 30 km, official sources said.
