Berhampur: Sixty-one-year-old Tnzin, a Tibetan who settled in Chandragiri, exercised his franchise in the assembly and Lok Sabha elections in 2024 in Gajapati district’s Mohana assembly constituency. In the coming election, he may not be able to vote as his name has been deleted from the final voter list of the district published on Monday.Not only Tnzin, names of around 300 Tibetans living in their different camps have been deleted from the voters’ list during the SIR exercise. “We have complained to the booth-level officer (BLO) during the period of grievance,” said Tashi Lhamo (35).Lobsang Dolma, a Tibetan woman living in Chandragiri settlement, expressed her concern over the deletion of their names from the final voters’ list. Tnzin, an executive body member of Tibetan Youth Congress, said names of almost all Tibetan refugees living in the settlement camps of Chandragiri, Jirang, Labarsingh, Mahendragarh and Tankilipadar are missing in the final voters’ list. “We will again appeal to the district authorities to add their names,” he said.Another Tibetan said before the general election held in 2024, several of them had been added to the voter list. Tibetans were settled in Gajapati district in 1962 after they fled from Tibet along with the Dalai Lama. Around 2,500 Tibetans are settled in the five camps.Mohana tehsildar Chakaradhar Padhy said the Tibetans settled in the area are not Indians. “During the SIR exercise, they could not submit any document of their Indian citizen. As per the SIR guideline, the base year was taken as 2002. Their names could not be found in the voters’ list in 2002. After proper verification of the documents, some of the voters’ names were deleted in the final list as per the SIR guidelines,” he said.
