Ashis SenapatiJagatsinghpur: Seven suspected drug traffickers, including two brothers, were arrested on Sunday for allegedly ramming their four-wheeler into a constable who was part of a police team attempting to stop them at College Square near Jagatsinghpur town around midnight on Saturday.The constable, Nityananda Senapati, sustained serious injuries in the incident and suffered a fracture in his right hand.According to a police officer, “The incident occurred when the police team signalled the four-wheeler to stop. Instead of complying, the driver allegedly accelerated and ran the vehicle over the constable.”Following the incident, an alert was immediately issued to police stations in the area through wireless communication. Within two hours, police intercepted and seized the vehicle and arrested the seven accused.Among those arrested were Vicky Parija (36) and his younger brother Zaki Parija (32), both residents of Jagatsinghpur town. Police said the duo had been arrested about eight months ago in connection with a drug trafficking racket and were released on bail two months ago.A case has been registered against the accused, who have been booked under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to attempt to murder. Further investigation is underway, said Sub- Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Jagatsinghpur, Dibya Ranjan Nath.The incident has sparked outrage in the region and raised concerns over the alleged growing influence of drug traffickers in the district. Locals have demanded strict action against those involved to prevent such attacks on police personnel.According to social worker Sarat Rout of the district , some villages in Jagatsinghpur district and adjoining areas have allegedly remained hubs for drug traffickers and peddlers for more than a decade. He said addicts from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and other areas procure banned drugs from these places.Rout further said drug addiction among local youths had also contributed to petty thefts and other crimes, resulting in a rise in the crime graph in the district. He added that some drug peddlers were making substantial profits by supplying banned substances to cities, while many youths had lost their livelihoods and family resources after becoming addicted.
