Tharoor: Hosting Brics matter of 'great prestige'

NEW DELHI: A day after Congress’s P Chidambaram said the last 2-3 Brics summits have been without any tangible benefits for the country, party MP Shashi Tharoor Friday said it is par for course in diplomacy and one values a platform because it demonstrates India’s influence to convene meetings of important countries.Chidambaram said Brics used to deliver concrete benefits but has stopped doing so, in what appeared a way of comparing the summits during Congress’s tenure with that under BJP govt. Tharoor conceded his point, adding the last time there was a tangible benefit was when he, as UPA finance minister, saw the launch of “development bank” in Brics.“We have been longer on lofty rhetoric and grand declarations but shorter on tangible measurable outcomes. But that is par for course in diplomacy…,” he said. “Having a dozen heads of state and govt… is a matter of great prestige.” TNN
