MUMBAI: In a Akshay Kumar-starrer Special 26-style plot, a sacked driver allegedly teamed up with two Income Tax officials and others to conduct a fake raid at his former employer’s office in Mumbai and demand Rs 1 crore. The extortion bid was foiled after the company owner asked the alleged raiding team to produce authorisation documents.Andheri police have arrested 10 people in connection with the July 17 incident, including two serving I-T officials. Police said the operation was masterminded by former company driver Santosh Khopatkar, 37, who was sacked about three months before the alleged raid and wanted revenge against his former employer.The fake raid was conducted at Two M Ophthotronics Pvt Ltd in Sahar Cargo Estate, Chakala. Police registered an FIR on September 4 following a complaint by company owner Rajkumar Kandasami.Kandasami told police that his employees called him saying I-T officials had raided the office. Two men in plain clothes later approached Kandasami and his wife near their home, introduced themselves as I-T officials and displayed an identity card. They allegedly forced the couple into an aggregator cab and took them to the office.Sub-inspector Rohan Surve said the accused questioned employees, examined company documents and took away the mobile phones of Kandasami, his wife and staff. They allegedly produced a purported search warrant and obtained Kandasami’s signature on it.The group questioned Kandasami about cash transactions, threatened him with a substantial penalty and offered to settle the purported tax case for Rs 1 crore. However, Kandasami asked them to produce authorisation documents for the raid. The alleged raiding team could not produce any and left empty-handed after around three hours.Kandasami subsequently checked with his chartered accountant and found that the Income Tax department had not ordered any raid at his company.Police said their investigation revealed that Khopatkar had provided the tip-off about the company. He had allegedly approached the I-T officials for help in raiding his former employer after being sacked.The two I-T officials arrested in the case are inspector Sureshkumar Mishra, 57, posted at the Piramal Chamber office in Lalbaug, and tax assistant Sunil Gore, 59, posted at the Kautilya Bhavan office in BKC.Police said Mishra and Gore had allegedly conducted a similar raid on a company in Manpada and demanded Rs 65 lakh.Those arrested earlier in the Chakala case include Khopatkar, Vinay More, 37, Prem Sabnani, 50, Pragnya M, Reshma Shyamrao Warang, 41, and Shabina Shaikh, 48.DCP (West Zone-3) Datta Nalawade said police also took custody of Jitendra More of Thane and Ashok Shinde of Vile Parle West on Thursday. The two were already in judicial custody in connection with the Manpada case.A team led by senior inspector Umesh Machindar, inspector Atul Nikam, assistant inspector Ramdas Kadam and sub-inspectors Rohan Surve and Rameshwar Karpe analysed call records, mobile numbers, dump data, location details and CCTV footage from government and private cameras.Investigators are examining the seized phones for calls, chats, WhatsApp messages and financial transactions to establish the alleged conspiracy, identify other associates and determine the role of each accused.
