Kendrapada: Police arrested a watchman and detained a 13-year-old boy on Tuesday for allegedly raping a 16-year-old tribal girl at a govt-funded shelter home in Kendrapada district, police said.The girl, an inmate of the shelter home, was allegedly sexually assaulted multiple times by the accused duo, leaving her four months pregnant. While one of the accused worked as a watchman at the facility, the other was staying at a child care institute (CCI) run by the organisation that operates the shelter.The victim, a native of Jharkhand, was rescued by Childline in Kendrapada on June 22, 2023, and placed in the shelter home on the orders of the district child welfare committee (CWC). “About two months ago, she was reunited with her family in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district after officials traced her address,” said Kendrapada district child protection officer Bijay Ketan Sahoo.According to an FIR lodged by the chairperson of the West Singhbhum CWC on Friday, the girl was allegedly raped several times by the two accused during her stay at the shelter home. The complaint was subsequently forwarded to Kendrapada police through West Singhbhum police for investigation.“Acting on the complaint, we launched an investigation and arrested the watchman under Section 70(2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 4 and 6 of the Pocso Act,” said investigating officer Padmalaya Pradhan.The girl’s pregnancy came to light after her mother noticed physical changes and alerted the CWC. A medical examination later confirmed that she was four months pregnant, police said.Police said further investigation is underway and more arrests cannot be ruled out.“Meanwhile, the district administration has initiated action against the shelter home and shifted all inmates to another shelter facility in the district,” said Kendrapada CWC chairperson Swagatika Patra.
